General Information

The road to Rhodes which turns off the Maclear-Mt Fletcher Road (marked on some maps as a scenic route) is sometimes in a bad condition and should not be attempted when wet.

The road from Maclear to Rhodes is mostly in poor condition, and due to loose stones and 'middelmannetjies' not recommended for cars. A 4x4 vehicle not necessary when dry, but high ground clearance is needed.

Watch out for speed humps outside and inside Mt Fletcher. The humps are atrocious and will severely damage a vehicle - even at 60km/hour.

Speed traps are common at the entrance to and exits from Matatiele, Mt Fletcher, Maclear, Ugie, Elliot, Indwe, Barkly-East and Dordrecht.

The speed limit in the old Transkei is still 100km/hour.

Speed traps in the Kei cuttings are common - beware!
